The Just Imagine Cottage

The Cottage is a 2,000 square ft. Victorian house at Renaissance Park (formerly the Central State Hospital campus) in Milledgeville, GA.

Stylistically, it suggests origins around the turn of the twentieth century. It was built to house CSH staff and physicians during their tenures at the hospital. When Georgia’s Old Capital Museum Society began looking for space to accommodate offices, meetings, and pocket exhibits during the renovation of the adjacent depot building for a regional heritage center, the cottage’s location was perfect. However, it had been unoccupied for 12 years. Nature had taken over and vines covered the house. As Trustees toured inside, even the most optimistic in the group were challenged and were overheard more than once saying, “Just imagine how this room will look when it gets paint and a ceiling” or “Just imagine the front porch when it is rebuilt.” Visitors today are incredulous at the transformation of the cottage, but the pictures tell it all.

Today, The Just Imagine Cottage is the command center for The Depot renovation and the location for ongoing activities–offices, club meetings, planning sessions, and pocket exhibits. It is a place where visitors stop and enjoy sitting in rocking chairs on the front
porch as they examine the driving tour guides of the campus.
