The renovation of the train depot is an exciting, but a challenging project when working to adapt a 133-year-old structure for modern use. Particularly when that building has been added on to, remodeled, and stood vacant for nearly 50 years. To date the project has addressed ground water intrusion, crumbling bricks, the addition of entrance ramps, the renovation of the former loading dock, repair of the bargeboard at the front of the building, and converting three former offices into a Green Room that houses The History of Central State Hospital exhibit. A fire suppression system has been installed throughout the building thanks to a donor gift.
Once completed, The Depot will feature traditional and high technology interactive exhibits, a bookstore, theater/community event space, offices, and reception area. The exhibits will recount the history of Milledgeville and the Central Georgia region and include African American history and culture and the legacy of Central State Hospital. The theater will provide space for dance, musical performances, and plays, The Theater/Community Gathering space will be available for town-hall meetings, corporate meetings, weddings, receptions, and similar functions with up to 200 seats. Storage at the back of the building for props and other elements will contribute to the space’s adaptability.
Memberships, fundraisers, donations, and grants contribute to the ongoing renovation of The Depot. Once The Depot is finished, offices in The Just Imagine Cottage will move into the building. The Cottage will then become a STEAM educational center for after school and summer programs.
